At work today at the Hale, Wendover Forest, I had the job of trimming the 8-10ft Beech hedge round the perimeter and came across (in the top) a recently deserted but empty nest which looked vaguely familiar but i decided it belonged either to a pair of Collared Doves or Woodpigeon that had used dry water lily stems instead of twigs.
Later whilst clearing up I saw movement on the artificial garden pond and a Moorhen was feeding two young and it was immediately obvious that it was her nest . The nest was at least 9ft up and the pond only 12ft accross (recently refurbished by yours truly).
On a more sobering note there was three fresh piles of glass on the side of the road where people park to walk up to Wendover Woods (Richard Billyard)
