TUESDAY 1 JULY
There were at least 3, probably 4 calling
COMMON QUAILS this afternoon in the DOWN FARM CEREAL FIELDS at PITSTONE HILL - 1
east of the road and the others in the first large field on the Aldbury side of
the hill. Also 5 jangling male CORN BUNTINGS, a male YELLOWHAMMER, several
Linnets and Skylarks, a male Common Whitethroat and vast numbers of Marbled
White butterflies.
Nearby, at IVINGHOE HILLS NR, at least 40
DARK GREEN FRITILLARIES in the vicinity of the Duke Ridge, plus large numbers of
Marbled White, Ringlet and Meadow Browns; also singing Song Thrush and Willow
Warbler and some very confiding Meadow Pipits....
No Chalk Hill Blues out yet at GALLOWS HILL
but Lesser Whitethroat there, several Blackcaps, Stock Dove, Song Thrush and a
pair of Bullfinches
