FERRUGINOUS still

27 OCTOBER

On STARTOP'S, both the drake RING-NECKED DUCK and this drake GREATER SCAUP were present, along with 17 Great Crested Grebe, a lone Dabchick, 6 Shoveler, 3 Meadow Pipits and a flyover Redwing.

Over at WILSTONE, the drake FERRUGINOUS DUCK was difficult, commuting between the Drayton Bank and the shallow water along the edge, but pretty distant from the car park steps (my best record shots are presented below). Wildfowl numbers remain very high, with 170 Mallard, 33 Gadwall, 4 PINTAIL, 680 Wigeon, 522 Teal, 98 Shoveler, 278 Tufted Duck and 215 Pochard, while 26 Mute Swans remain, 47 Greylag Geese and 5 Dabchick. The European Golden Plover flock continues to climb in number on a daily basis with 179 counted this afternoon, with 240 Lapwing and a single DUNLIN with them (see image below). The Kingfisher was still around, along with 2 JACK SNIPE, 3 Common Snipe, 6 Little Egret and several Grey Wagtails
