SEPTEMBER 1ST 2008 - more GODWITS highlight




The adult pair of Whooper Swans have relocated from their summer haunt of Dunstable Sewage Farm in Bedfordshire and have now taken up residency in the NW corner of Wilstone Reservoir (Mike Wallen)

MONDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER

(A marked change to the weather, with fresh SW winds back once more. Apart from the odd isolated shower, a dry day, but cloudy throughout, and rather warm)

WILSTONE RESERVOIR (1426-1515 hours; no-one else present for a change)

Little Grebe - 5
Great Crested Grebe - 16 still
Sinensis Cormorant - 26
Grey Heron - 8
LITTLE EGRET - both birds still present, this afternoon feeding in 'Cemetery Corner'
Mute Swan - reduction to 69
WHOOPER SWANS - both adults present (see Mike Wallen's superb images above)
Greylag & Canada Geese present (no counts)
Mallard - 238
Gadwall - 21 (adult drakes now moulting into fine plumage)
Shoveler - 56
Eurasian Wigeon - both the eclipse drake and female still present
Common Teal - 83
*GARGANEY - still present and showing well on left side of bund from hide.
Northern Pochard - 36
Tufted Duck - 93
RUDDY DUCK - 1 female
HOBBY - at least 1 still present
Common Kestrel
Moorhen - 106 feeding on exposed mud
Coots - slight reduction - 634 click-counted

RINGED PLOVER - 1 flew through (DB)
Lapwing - 299
COMMON SANDPIPER - juvenile still present on spit
COMMON GREENSHANK - all 5 juveniles still present
*BLACK-TAILED GODWIT - 2 'new' juveniles gracing mud to right of hide (LGRE)
Black-headed Gull - 211
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 5
COMMON TERN - adult flew in at 1457 hours and remained until at least 1515

*SAND MARTINS - 25+ present
Barn Swallow - steady passage west, perhaps totalling 30 birds
House Martin - still 40+

A single Great Crested Grebe was all of note on TRINGFORD RESERVOIR, with 3 more and 22 SAND MARTINS on STARTOPSEND RESERVOIR and the continuing RED-CRESTED POCHARD, 53 Mallard and single Common Teal, drake Northern Pochard and female Tufted Duck on MARSWORTH RESERVOIR. The latter also held 3 Great Crested Grebes (including the adult feeding its single, growing young) with the small wood yielding a large, noisy and active tit-flock, incorporating 12+ Long-taileds, a few Blues, Goldcrest and at least 3 moulting Common Chiffchaffs.
