As predicted - COMMON CROSSBILL irruption finally reaches the reservoirs

The COMMON CROSSBILLS depicted here are part of the large numbers recorded thus far on North Ronaldsay in Orkney.
Today however saw the first flock in the Tring area.........
One or two Common Sandpipers and a Green Sandpiper were completely eclipsed by 20 to 30 COMMON CROSSBILLS flying over. At approx 6:50am I heard chipping calls and from out of the sun flew a flock of Crossbills. They were at treetop height as they flew SSW over the reservoir and through the tops of the poplars - off towards Wendover Woods perhaps? As they flew through the tree tops I was able to see a number of splendid red males in the flock. This is easily my best sighting of Crossbills at the reservoirs given the pair of calling silhouettes I obtained in the past (Roy Hargreaves)
