(A day of strong SW winds with occasional heavy showers; fairly warm)
HIGHLIGHTS
The juvenile GREY PHALAROPE remained at Weston Turville Reservoir. A juvenile WOOD SANDPIPER new in this evening (the 6th of the autumn so far), huge numbers of hirundines and an influx of NORTHERN PINTAILS
WESTON TURVILLE RESERVOIR
The juvenile GREY PHALAROPE remained until 1230 hours but then flew off strongly NW (Dave Parmenter, Paul Keene, Mike Collard, et al)
WILSTONE RESERVOIR
(1730-1838 hours, with DB, and later MW, SR & AN)
LITTLE EGRETS - 2 birds still present
Mute Swan - 58
WHOOPER SWANS - the adult pair remain
Greylag Geese - increased up to 48
Eurasian Wigeon - 5 birds present (3 drakes, 2 females) (LGRE) (present since 1st - MW)
Common Teal - at least 107 still present
**NORTHERN PINTAIL - 5 present this evening with Mallards in the 'SW quarter'.
*NORTHERN SHOVELER - at least 83 birds now present
COMMON SANDPIPER - 1 still remaining on spit
**WOOD SANDPIPER - a juvenile, first seen at 1730, was present on the narrow spit immediately opposite the car park steps (DB & LGRE, later MW, SR, AN). It remained until 1838 hours, when I departed.
*BLACK-TAILED GODWIT - 2 juveniles still present
COMMON GREENSHANK - now 6 juveniles present (MW, LGRE)
COMMON TERNS - 4 flew in at 1900 (Af Nasir)
HOBBY - adult over car park
COMMON KINGFISHER
Green Woodpecker - 1 in Poplars near Hide
At 1815 hours, I click-counted a minimum 584 hirundines in the sky, including 344 SAND MARTINS, 198 House Martins and 42 Barn Swallows (the latter mostly juvenile).
STARTOPSEND RESERVOIR
The WHITE WAGTAIL and 2 YELLOW WAGTAILS remain (per MW)
